luffy smiles even at the thought of his death, zoro feels so helpless that he can't save his captain, sanji feels angry at luffy for saying goodbye since he fears to lose him, buggy is delighted ,smoker is disappointed at luffy, thinking that he's just another common pirate, all of that changed when the lightning hits buggy's sword. Dragon's power is still a mystery tho, its either he help luffy at that point or the heavens miracle, but either way its chilling since if its dragon, then that means he can manipulate weather since we only saw him manipulate wind, and its much more chilling to know that its a miracle, knowing that the storm came at the most oddly times, and its like what they said, the heavens wanted luffy to survive

We just witnessed unforgettable legendary scene. How Luffy said he's gonna be pirate king in front of whole bunch of gp, pirate and navy, smiling being edge of death to being rescued by lightning and then the straw hat which flew just came in front of him, he was just laughing, and laughing. That sure made all the people shocked along side with Zoro, Sanji and Smoker. And then someone mysterious appeared.

Contrary to most people, I hated this scene. Luffy should've been able to escape on his own in this situation, and not by pure coincidence. I know it was supposed to showcase his lack of fear on the brink of death, but against someone like Buggy the Clown (whom he had already beaten at this point)? Come on, that was very weak.

I see you're point but yeah kinda dumb of Luffy but HE IS DUMB tho. He's caught off guard and prolly wasn't thinking anything about the board when Cabaji caught him and thinking: " I could knock this off/ I can stretch my body to escape nothing to worry about whatever" something like that. But the board most likely had kairouseki/seastones in it rendering luffy's df ineffective. As you can see, he tried to get out but his neck didn't even stretch out.. considering the execution platform was under the world government's reign(who had a lot of those kairousekis) and ofc, smoker's weapon. And it's an execution platform, df or no df WG will prolly have it install it there to for sure kill pirates. So yeah.

When he realized there's nothing to do and no escaping, he just called out the crew's name and apologized while smiling. So yeah. There may be a lot of different better ways to express the said idea but keep in mind that this time, Oda is still young when he wrote this. But nevertheless, i think it's written well and just fits the overall theme and what message Oda had since the scene is just significant too in correlation to Roger's death, will of D, Dragon's appearance, etc. so yeah.
